Transformational change has grasped the imagination of many senior business leaders who wish to move their organisation to a higher level of performance. Transformation is very reliant on people changing their behaviours and adopting new mental models. One of the largest contributors to change failures is people factors not being addressed such as absence of effective change leadership, failure to engage those impacted most, lack of understanding of the psychological impacts of change, etc. From personal experience, as a coach and change management practitioner, I have seen how coaching can be very effectively employed to support change leaders to address the people factors more effectively and make a positive contribution towards achieving a successful change outcome even on the most complex transformation projects.

This session aims to

  • Give you insights into how to effectively coach change leaders and managers
  • Provide hands on experience with tailored change coaching tools
  • Share my lessons learned as a coaching change practitioner.

I bring together the best of coaching and change management practice areas. I strive to support clients to build their change leadership capabilities and provide them with tools and techniques to coach and support their own teams through changes ahead.


Denis Kelly has over 20 years’ experience delivering change as a Project Manager and Change Management Practitioner. He has recently taken up a key role as Engineering Capability Development Manager at ESB. In his previous role as Organisational Effectiveness and Change Manager at ESB Networks he worked closely with Senior Leaders and Managers, supporting them to lead a number of large change projects in the organisation. His change management style empowers his clients using a coaching style of intervention. This style underpins the critical role of managers as change leaders and aims to build their ability to deliver successful change. He has developed a number of specific change coaching tools: The Power to Empowerment Continuum, Influence Zones, and the Change Initiative Quick Assessment Tool.

Denis specialises in the areas of Organisation Design, Organisation Development, Talent Management, Change Management, and Enterprise Change. He is a qualified Coach, Change Manager, Project Manager, NLP Practitioner, and a Chartered Member of CIPD. He co-founded Organisation Change Management Network Ireland, has spoken at numerous change management workshops, delivers bespoke change leadership training, and is a visiting lecturer at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) and Maynooth University (Ireland). He has contributed to a number of publications and his own book ‘Succession Management for Technical and Professional Organisations’ is due to be published later in the year.
