Almost all of us work across cultures now, even if we don’t leave home. Cultural factors have a significant impact on coaching effectiveness, however it is an area that many people don’t pay enough attention to. Coaches can greatly help their clients by helping them reflect on their own cultural preferences and the cultural differences of others, learn more about models of culture and thereby transform the results they achieve. In this session I will reflect on my own experience of living and working in five countries on three continents and delivering projects on the ground in twenty countries. I will share and critique research by cultural thought leaders such as Hofstede, Trompenaars and Rosinski. I will share the models and questions that I find useful when working with executives who are working outside their own culture or leading multinational teams, and when working with culturally diverse teams. These models can also be applied beyond national culture to improve dialogue when considering other kinds of diversity. I will suggest how intercultural competence resembles coaching competence. Finally, I will argue that Anglo Saxon national cultures have shaped our dominant coaching practice and how this may be changing. Then we’ll discuss together.


Tim Bright is an experienced executive coach and HR consultant, and is a partner with OneWorld Consulting, based in Istanbul. Tim has been coaching since 1997 and has lived and worked in Asia, the US, and Europe. He now mostly works in Turkey, the Middle East, Russia, and Central Asia. Tim uses a diverse range of coaching methodologies and aims to create effective reflective time and space for his clients, and to balance a supportive and challenging approach. He aims to help clients raise their self-awareness and often uses strengths based and solutions focused methodologies. Tim also works as a leadership team consultant and facilitator, mentoring programme consultant and executive search consultant. Tim’s interests include on-boarding coaching, the first 90 days, cultural differences, authentic leadership, leadership team effectiveness, and high integrity corporate politics.

Tim’s clients include Adidas, Anadolu Group, Arcelik, Bayer, Borusan, Bosch, Coca-Cola, Harvard Business School, Henkel, HSBC, Microsoft, Nestle, Pladis, Sabanci Group, Siemens, and Vodafone. Tim also leads a team of five coaches working on client projects for OneWorld Consulting. Tim has completed the EQA accredited Master Coach programme with the Professional Development Foundation and a Masters Degree in Executive Coaching from Middlesex University (UK). He is a co-founder of EMCC Turkey.
